Day 238

1 Samuel 1:

The book of Samuel introduces the next significant shift in the history and structure of the leadership of the Children of Israel.  Samuel is a transitional leader: He acts as a Judge but he is also one of the greatest prophets of the Old Testament. He is used by God to lead the people but also to oversee the transition of Israel from tribes led by a single God appointed leader to a Monarchy led by a King and his subsequent heirs.  Samuel emerges as a child of promise and from the outset he is set apart for greatness.  The book of Samuel is important and insightful as it displays the attitudes of individuals and the various options for responding to the Lord.  Hannah’s gift to the Lord of her most precious son is a wonderful picture of the Father and Jesus and the outcome for the people is (as in the latter case) blessing.

Psalm 150:

Let no one be confused!  Let no one be in doubt! If you have breath, then it is time to praise the Lord! The Book of Psalms comes to it rowdy climax and everybody lifts their voice!  150 songs, 150 windows to the understanding of people’s worship, 150 contemplations, 150 inspirations…if you have been lifted, challenged and inspired then the book of Psalms has done its job!

Isaiah 47:

There is a woe coming upon Babylon…the Lord allowed Babylon to rise in ascendancy above Israel so that Israel would learn its lesson and bow the knee to their one true Lord but that same Lord requires recompense from Babylon for its actions and attitudes which rail against God.  Sin never passes unnoticed, sin is never in fashion, sin will never be overlooked by the Lord.  Babylon had to answer for all that it had done (to Israel and the other nations it conquered).  Ever drop of innocent blood, every individual that was violated, every wrong came up before the Lord and filled His ears and was played out in front of His eyes.  This chapter is the retribution of the Lord for all the sin of Babylon.  It is forever to stand as a caution to all who would believe that sin if of no consequence and that the Lord is hard of hearing or suffers from selective blindness!
